03 · Understand your numbers

How to read an internet speed test

You don’t need to know internet jargon to understand how strong your connection is. All you need are these two numbers.

Download speed

The speed at which data reaches your device from the internet.
Your download speed controls
  • How fast your Netflix drama loads without buffering
  • How well you can see and hear others on video calls
  • How smoothly a news or weather page loads

Tip:  Higher download = less waiting and smoother streaming.

Upload speed

The speed at which data travels from your device to the internet.
Your upload speed controls
  • How fast you can share a video you’ve recorded
  • How well people can see and hear you on video calls
  • How quickly you can back up your data to the cloud

Tip: Higher upload = clearer outgoing calls and faster video sharing.

Important: always remember — wireless speeds are slower than a wired connection.

04 · Why it’s worth a minute

Why should you take a broadband speed test?

A speed test is useful for seniors who manage their own home internet. Here are some of the ways it can help.

01

Check your performance and see if your speed is enough for everyday activities.

02
Decide whether you need to upgrade to a faster plan.
03

Check if your provider is delivering the speeds they promised.

04

Troubleshoot common issues — buffering, slow downloads, or dropped video calls.

05

Find out if your connection can handle another device (or two).

06

Make sure everything works as it should — for greater peace of mind.

06 · Get a true reading

How to get accurate speed test results

Every test environment is different. A few simple steps help our tool measure your connection at its full capacity.

staying connected

Wired beats Wi-Fi for accuracy

1
Plug your device directly into the modem or router with an Ethernet cable — more accurate than testing over Wi-Fi.
2
Repeat the test at different times of day. Speeds can be slower in the evenings when most people are online.
3
Turn your modem and router off for 10–15 seconds before running the test.
4
If you’re on Wi-Fi, sit close to the router so walls and distance don’t affect your result.
5
Pause any heavy internet use during the test so the tool can measure your full capacity.

Should I switch?

Do I need to switch my provider?

Not sure if it’s time to switch? Here are some good reasons to consider it.

  • Your internet speed is slower than what you pay for
  • Grandkids are visiting (more devices and users on the network)
  • Frequent outages make it hard to stay online
  • Customer service is spotty and hard to reach
  • Better technology and speeds are now available
  • Your bill is too high after the promotional period ends
